Wii Fit & Wii Balance Board

It's amazing how quickly things change in the world of gaming. When I first published this hub at the end of April 2008, Wii Fit had not been launched yet (outside of Japan) and the hype surrounding the game was still building. There wasn't too much online chatter about the Wii Balance Board itself and it was mostly just speculation on dedicated gaming sites about possible future games.

Almost a year on and everything has changed. Now everyone is talking about Wii Fit, from stay at home moms to gaming enthusiasts and the Wii Board itself has started to gain more attention.

The purpose of this hub was always to provide a quick snapshot of available or upcoming balance board compatible games and that's how it will remain. But the Wii Balance Board has developed a life of its own, so much so that I've created a dedicated Wii Balance Board Blog with loads more information about the Wii Board including game rumours, hacks and everything else related so check it out.

We Ski and Snowboard
Amazon Price: $9.99
List Price: $29.99

We Ski & Snowboard

We Ski & Snowboard is the followup to last year's We Ski/Family Ski which was one of the first third-party balance board compatible games. Whilst We Ski was fun, it wasn't great and had one obvious omission - no snowboarding.

We Ski & Snowboarding is the family ski game that we've always wanted. The same family-friendly appeal as the original but now on a fully explorable environment across two mountains. There's also a Fun Park with a half-pipe and rails for snowboarding tricks. Get yourself a copy - you won't be disappointed.

EA Sports Active

EA Sports Active is currently the most hotly anticipated new balance board compatible game for 2009. For those of you who have bought Wii Fit and found that from a fitness point of view, it wasn't as good or as effective has you'd hoped, Sports Active may just be the answer. Described my many as a more westernized Wii Fit, EA Sports Active is much more focussed at being a proper fitness tool. Here's a list of some of it's top features:

  • Over 20 exercises and activities.
  • Includes an onscreen personal trainer who will work out new daily exercise programs or you can create your own custom workouts.
  • Tracks calories burned in real-time.
  • Includes a resistance band to increase workout intensity and a nutrition guide.
  • True one-to-one motion. Your onscreen character will move with you, tracking both upper and lower body movement.
  • Multiplayer support so you can exercise with a partner.
  • Regular software updates.

EA Sports Active has been endorsed by top fitness pros Bob Greene (Oprah's personal trainer) and Carmen Bott and EA is really pushing this title, scheduled for release in the US this Spring, so keep an eye out for it.

New You: Inside Out

EA Sports Active hasn't even been released yet and already it faces some stiff competition from a new game called New You: Inside Out from Black Bean Games. Actually New You is less of a game and more of a health and fitness lifestyle product which combines fitness with nutritional advice and daily health tips.

Developed in conjunction with Fitness First, one of the world's largest health and fitness operators, New You let's users choose a particular lifestyle goal and then creates custom exercise and nutritional plans using recipes that complement physical exercises. The game also features content from the well known You Are What You Eat series making it potentially a much more complete package than EA Sports Active. Unfortunately you'll have to wait until it's release this September to find out for yourself just how good this is.

Wii Fit

Wii Fit is the latest example of an exergame, combining the benefits of exercise with the fun of gaming. Aimed at the entire family, Wii Fit comes with a range of games and exercises spread over four categories: balance games, yoga, muscle workouts and aerobic exercises. All of this is made possible by the Wii Balance Board which is able to work out exactly where your balance and body mass are placed and allows the game to determine whether or not you're doing an exercise correctly.

When you first get started with Wii Fit you will need to enter your height which together with your weight calculates your BMI (Body Mass Index). You then do a quick balance test to determine your current Wii Fit Age. This information is then stored on your profile (up to a maximum of 8 users) and as you use Wii Fit, you can begin to track your progress. The better you get, the more exercises and activities that are unlocked.

We Ski
Amazon Price: $7.99
List Price: $19.99

We Ski / Family Ski

Originally titled Family Ski for the Japanese market, We Ski is scheduled for launch in the United States on the 13 May. This family oriented multiplayer game (up to 4 players) takes you to the Happy Ski Resort where the powder is always fresh and there are never any queues to get to the top of the slopes. There are 14 courses with runs from beginner to advanced and of course, like all good resorts, a ski school where you can familiarize yourself with the gameplay.

In terms of characters, you can use an existing Mii or create and customize your own character and kit them out in gear that you unlock as you play the game. Game control is via the Wii Remote and Nunchuk and of course the Wii Balance Board which allows you to control the skis with your feet.

All in all this looks like great family fun. The only thing missing for me would be snowboarding but I don't think it will be long before we see a full-on snowboarding title.

Update: We now have that dedicated snowboarding title in the form of Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip. There's also an updated version of Family Ski scheduled and this time it will include snowboarding - hooray!

Babies Party

Nintendo DS users will most probably have heard of Imagine Babies. Well Babies Party by Ubisoft is an upcoming Wii version of this game. Babies party will include 30 mini-games based on a baby and carer's typical day and feature memory games, puzzles, colouring and cutting up activities. The game is also said to include Wii Balance Board support although for which activities is unknown.

Don King Boxing
Amazon Price: $10.00
List Price: $29.99

Don King Presents: Prizefighter

Scheduled for release in the United States on June 9, Prizefighter on the Wii is said to make use of the Wii Board although not for actual gameplay (which is a shame) but for the associated training exercises. Detailed information is still scarce but you can visit 2k's official Prizefighter website for more details.

G1 Jockey Wii 2008

This horse racing title from KOEI has been available on Wii for some time but the upcoming release scheduled for September in the UK/Europe will now include Balance Board support.

By assuming a jockey crouch position while standing on the Wii Board, players will be able to leap fences and steer their horse to victory. What's more, the game will include a career mode, allowing you to work your way through the ranks and breed horses to develop thoroughbred winners.

So, if you're a Wii-owning horse racing fan, this could just be the one for you.

Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009
Amazon Price: $5.30
List Price: $29.99

Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum

While the overall response to Wii Fit was positive, it didn't take longer for people to want more from their Wii Board in terms of fitness. If that sounds like you then this title may just be the ticket although you'll have to wait until the end of the year.

And if the name Jillian Michaels sounds familiar (assuming you're not a fan already) you would have seen her as the no-nonsense fitness trainer on NBC's hit show The Biggest Loser.

The game itself won't have any tie-in with the TV program but Jillian is said to be closely involved with the games development. A press release from the games publisher, Majesco, had this to say:

"Players become new recruits in Jillian's boot camp where they enroll in a unique training program composed of challenging fitness tests and an ever-changing series of workouts".

Raving Rabbids TV Party

Those Raving Rabbids have been around for some time now and this next version (release date still to be confirmed) looks to be as wacky as ever. Although complete details of the game have not been released yet, one of the Wii board mini games demo'd is called Beestie Boarding and involves sitting on the Wii board as you steer a wildebeest down a ski slope. No, it doesn't make any sense but then it doesn't have to - that's the whole point of Raving Rabbids.

Tetris Party

Good news for Tetris fans - this classic game is finally coming to the Wii as a WiiWare title and as an added twist, it will include balance board support. Hudson Soft has developed this game and instead of just being another clone, they've added lots of new single and multiplayer game modes. It even has an online mode so you can play Tetris with your friends over the Internet. Tetris Party will be available in the US this Fall.

I have a Wii and the Wii Balance Board. I've played the Wii Fit games, and they are really very fun. There are yoga poses and strength training games, balance games and aerobics. I just got the We Ski yesterday, and I haven't had a chance to play it yet, but I'm very excited!

Amy_Roberts 3 years ago

Great hub! It's made me want a wii even more now! :)

That Wii Balance Board is tough. I just tried it a friend's house the other day and it kicked my butt. It was still a lot of fun though :)

MTBurr 3 years ago

We recently got the balance board and Wii Fit is pretty cool. What I don't understand is why Nintendo doesn't just update the controls so you can define the balance board as a control stick. Then we could use the balance board with all games that use the C stick. That would be really sweet and seems like it should be a pretty simple thing for Nintendo to implement in a software update.

buhadram 3 years ago

Wii Fit is good, but Dance-Dance Party pad is even better if we want to burn more calories. I usually practice dancing using it almost everyday, and I sweat a lot.

I still enjoy my Wii Fit but I must admit I'm very curious to find out more about Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum

mattlai7 3 years ago

im really waiting to hear more about that too alwayslearning.

But what i really want is for nintendo to come up with awesome fantasy game that incorporates the balance boards fulll potential. I AM A NINTENDO FAN FOREVER. I cant wait till the wii can support voice chat with cam that will be cool.

Niki_Buchen 3 years ago

Thank you for this detailed informations. I want to buy for my son (and of course me ;-)) a play station - which means, it can be from Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo. But your blog showed me that it is only one platform who brings real innovations. The Wii Balance Board is just one of them. I think I will like it very much. Beside this the price is also convincing. Greetings, Niki

I just got the wii fit, I have had a wii for some time, finding cool games is on and off, but the wii fit changed that, the ski games and future possibilities are exiting! I will be checking back here to keep up on its developments, (nice touch having amazon links to purchase said games)

I love the wii balance board games. My sister, who did a lot of Pilate's workouts, has now dropped her toning workout and switched completely over to wii. In fact, I believe wii has Pilate's on their exercising programs. I recommend the wii board games to everyone. Parents should also replace their children's old game system with it.

kevin 3 years ago

Shawn White Snowboarding is freaking awsome! It is much like tony hawk but soo much more fun with a balance board! I am thinking the next tony hawk game NEEDS to work with the balance board.

chip 3 years ago

I like we ski

kevin 3 years ago

how would you use wii music with the board? haha i dont get it

su su 3 years ago

The Wii fit balance board is the best thing they could have ever created for children that love video games. Now they can play games w/out being idle all day long! Kudos to Nintendo!!! Wii Fit is awesome.

kym 3 years ago

Kevin the board is used in Wii music drumming mode, because it doesnt make good as a washboard or wobbleboard. But Wii music is a waste of time anyway... Guitar Hero Orchestra Edition anyone?

Channing 3 years ago

I bought the Wii fit about one week ago and I have played all of the balance games, yoga positions, strength training poses, etc. I hate to say I was a little disappointed in the Wii Fit game as it does not take you through a workout routine...it only teaches you individual poses. Is there something I am missing??

Also I just bought Jillian Michael's new game that is compatable with the balance board. I will let you know how it goes...

voador 3 years ago

Kevin,

One way the balance board can be used with wii music is as pedals for the drums. It's pretty cool actually. I'm not sure if there are other ways that the board comes into play with wii music. I just saw a friend of mine using it to play the drums.

The wii is awesome!!! Great Hub!

Matt Bisogno 3 years ago

G1 Jockey is one of the best games of all time, and definitely the best horse racing game. Although the career mode is very in-depth, I must admit I just love racing, especially the jumps where it takes a fair bit of practice before you stay on.

My mate Gavin and I have a combined age of around 80, and we can't get enough of it: we're like two 12 year old's when it comes to G1.

Brilliant!

m snoke 3 years ago

We have the wii fit and just bought Outdoor Challenge ( with mat rather than board). The OC has what Wii fit was lacking, a spontaneous interface so that you can play with friends. It seemed ( i could be wrong!) that your center of gravity was at issue with the balance board, and precluded guests just jumping on if they varied much from your weight. Anyone else find this a problem?

Melanie 3 years ago

Apparantly Jillian Michael's Fitness Ultimatum is CRAP, really bad control response, boring excercises, and horrible graphics, just go to Amazon look it up and read the reviews...

SteveAngeles 3 years ago

Good to know that Jillian Michael's game sucks, I'll wait for it on clearance, in the meantime I will continue my invented combined weight vest and dumbells and step stool on Free Step

I have a Wii, and have been thinking about getting one of these boards.

Are they really that much fun?

bernie 3 years ago

I have the Jullian Michael's Fitness, but no Wii board. Hardly any of the excercises seem to do much and most are unorginal and unispired. My favorite exercise Wii game is My Fitness Trainer. It is a much more thorough and polished game.

LuvBri05 2 years ago

I have had my wii fit for a couple months now. I loved it at first and played it daily. After a few days I managed to unlock all the games and complete them all. Now it's not as fun and doesn't give as good of a work out. Plus the balance board says the same phrases everytime I check in. I prefer my golds gym workout instead. I use the wii fit to check in and log my activity. I wish the wii fit would have included some kind of nutritional log or activity.

I strongly reccommend Wii Fit Plus. It is the upgraded version with a lot of new games, yoga moves, strength training, and routines. I lost 3.7lbs in less than 24 hours with this thing. I swear by it!

Hi i am james and i am 12 and i really like it! i lost 4lbs :)

Been thinking of getting one of these boards, but I want to make sure I don't lose my motivation. I have a tendency to shelve things aside after a week or two. Maybe I'll give up my gym membership and just work out at home. H-mmm.

lol-smileyface 2 years ago

This site SUCKS.

tyggers 2 years ago

can't find a fit or fit plus anywhere with the board. Local Gamestop just said Nintendo just told them there will not be any new ones available until late Feb. Since there are so many games now that use the balance board I think Nintendo should sell it separately

Nice list but you should update it a bit more. There are many new games available such as wii fit plus, Biggest loser and Jillian Michaels fitness ultimatum 2010.

Very disappointed. I thought Wii was primarily a "whole body" video game console. Now I find that there are only a dozen games that I would even consider. I detest "twidget" games that only result in thumb dexterity. Why can't they make Mario move when I move and jump when I jump?
